Who Is This Amazing Lady?
Charla Dedmon has dedicated 57 years of service to the students of Oklahoma. After teaching one year at Woodward in 1970 she spent 10 years with Lawton Public Schools and has served Walters Public Schools for the past 46 years.
Year after year, her choir program has earned many outstanding honors and awards. Mrs. Dedmon devotes countless hours after school and on week-ends helping her students prepare and achieve excellence in their performances. Her name is recognized by many teachers and students throughout the state.
Mrs. Dedmon became the Music Director for the First United Methodist Church in Walters early 1970’s and continues to this day as Music & Choir Director. During this time she organized a Carilloin Choir and inviting kids to be a part of the group at church. She spends many hours at the church after school and on weekends preparing for whatever project she has going on.
In addition to her work in the classroom and at Church Mrs. Dedmon generously volunteers her time and talents as Director of the Miss Walters Pageant since 1972. She spends many hours working with the girls on their talents, poise and just being prepared to do their best for the crown.
She helps in organizing the communities annual Thanksgiving and Christmas programs along with the pastors and church members. It has always been an amazing celebration each year.
Mrs. Dedmond joined the “Walters Theatre Guild” in the 1970’s and worked with local actors presenting a musical every summer for 11 years. She played the lead in South Pacific, played piano for most of the productions which included Paint Your Wagon, The Music Man, My Fair Lady, Funny Girl along with many, weddings, funerals, celebrations and of course tons of school productions.
Mrs. Dedmond was recognized at the Oklahoma State Department of Education Teacher of the Year Banquet in June 2026. They honored her extraordinary dedication and lifelong commitment to education, her students and the community. She has been the “Teacher of the Year” to most of her students. Her students throughout the years have loved her and knew they could depend on her to lend a helping hand whenever they needed her. She lets the students know, they are important and can succeed in many ways. She is an amazing example of dedication, committment, honesty, caring and the kids even say she can be funny! The students have a great deal of respect for Mrs. Dedmon.
Some other facts about Charla Dedmond you may not know. She began piano lessons at age 7 and never stopped and yes, her sister Pam says “Practice, practice practice!”
Charla graduated from Walters High School in 1965 where she was the Drum Major for the WHS Band. In 1968 she received several honors named “Queen of the West” at Elk City. Named “Homecoming Queen” at Southwestern State University and 2nd runner-up for “Miss Oklahoma”.
She has two brothers, Bill & Doyle Cain and one sister, Pam.
She was married to the late Wendall Dedmond, which was the postmaster for the Walters Post Office many years and the mother of two sons, that have been very successful in their careers, Jimmy & Eric Dedmond, along with daughter in law and grandchildren that are also in the education fields.
Charla Dedmond is a never ending story. She is always on the go doing whatever needs to be done and never complains!
