Arbor Day

On October first I had the honor of representing the Dahlia Garden Club at the Arbor Day Tree Planting ceremony at Sultan Park, which was hosted by the Walters 4-H Students and representatives of the city of Walters. Together we planted 25 Burr Oak Trees that will someday help to beautify the park.

We never think about the importance of trees in our daily lives but they help us and others in so many ways. They help to filter the air of toxins so that when we breathe, the air is so much cleaner and healthier. Trees also help give us shade which helps to keep us cool and our energy bills a little lower in the summertime. Trees also provide habitats for birds and animals and if you plant fruit or nut trees they will provide you with substanance for years to come.

It was so great to see the younger generation excited about planting trees for their future. Because it is for their future. Many years from now, the 4-H Students who planted these trees will be able to come here and sit under one of these trees and enjoy the shade and listen to the birds in it sing as the squirrels gather acorns for the winter, and they can feel pride in their accomplishment.

The Dahlia Garden Club of Walters is always doing everything we can to benefit and educate on the importance of planting trees, flowers, and shrubs throughtout our community. Last year, Walters was selected as a Tree City and this shows everyone how dedicated all of us are in helping beautify Sultan Park and our city.
