The Cotton County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scam messages and phone calls currently circulating in the area.
Citizens have reported receiving text messages claiming to be from the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety – Driver License Services stating that payment must be made immediately for a traffic violation or the recipient’s driver license will be suspended.
These messages are fraudulent. The Oklahoma Department of Public Safety and Oklahoma Highway Patrol do not collect traffic fines and do not contact citizens by text message requesting payment.
The Sheriff’s Office has also received reports of a “missed jury duty” scam, where callers claim a person has a warrant for failing to appear for jury duty and demand payment to avoid arrest.
The Cotton County Sheriff’s Office will not call citizens to demand payment for warrants, fines, or jury duty issues.
Residents are encouraged to disregard and delete these messages, hang up on suspicious callers, and never provide personal or financial information.
Anyone with questions or who believes they may have been targeted by a scam is encouraged to contact the Cotton County Sheriff’s Office.
