Melanie Mason-Spence Named Dahlia Garden Club President

It is with great pleasure that the Dahlia Garden Club announces Melanie Mason-Spence has been elected to be the State President for Oklahoma Garden Club 2025–2027.

In her own words, Melanie shares her journey in Garden Club:

“It is my sincere honor to introduce myself as I begin my two-year term as your 2025–2027 Oklahoma Garden Clubs State President. My name is Melanie Mason-Spence, and though I’m originally from Killeen, Texas, I’m proud to call Oklahoma home. Yes, I’m a Texan living in an Oklahoma world—and I truly love this state and the wonderful people who make it so special.

I became a member of the Walters Dahlia Garden Club in 2010. At the time, my husband had just returned from Iraq and was building our family business. Shortly after I came home from Iraq, I learned I was expecting our daughter before returning back. As a newcomer to a small town, I didn’t know many people and was searching for connection. That’s when Connie Landon, the previous business owner and office manager, invited me to a garden club meeting.

What I didn’t expect was to walk into a surprise baby shower hosted by Mary Thacker, Doris Taylor, Sue Hayes, Wyva Rhue Copeland, Dixie Calley, Shirley Johnston, Patty Powers, MaryAnn Holman, and many other kind-hearted women. That day marked the beginning of something truly special.

From that moment forward, MaryAnn Holman took me under her wing, mentoring me through the journey of leadership—from club president to district president, state chairman, Judges Council member, Nationally Federated Accredited Flower Show Judge—and now, I have the honor to serve as your State President.

What makes garden clubs so meaningful: the friendship, the fellowship, and the unwavering support we give one another. In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in deadlines and duties. But in a volunteer organization like ours, how we treat each other is what people remember most.”

Melanie’s 2025–2027 President’s Project will be “PLANT AMERICA – Oklahoma Garden Clubs, Inc. Celebrate America with Wildflowers.”

In partnership with the Oklahoma Native Plant Society, the goal is to plant native wildflower seeds in every county across the state—bringing beauty, pollinators, and public awareness to Oklahoma landscapes.

In addition, aligning with the South Central Region Director’s project to support families of fallen soldiers, Melanie’s goal is to install a Gold Star Memorial at Fort Sill National Cemetery.

“I’m deeply grateful for this opportunity to serve and build lasting relationships with each of you. I’m ready to take the bull by the horns, get my hands dirty, and do the work it takes to spread awareness, celebrate our mission, and stir up excitement about the ‘OG’—that’s Oklahoma Garden Clubs, of course!”

PLANT AMERICA – “Growing Together, Blooming Forever!”
