Cotton County More Prepared Than Ever During National Emergency Management Awareness Month

Walters, OK – September 3, 2025 – As communities across the nation observe National Emergency Management Awareness Month, Cotton County Emergency Management is proud to recognize the tremendous progress made locally in disaster preparedness and response.

Over the past six years, Cotton County has become more prepared than ever before to respond to natural disasters, severe weather, and other emergencies. Through investments in training, planning, community partnerships, and public education, the county has built a stronger, more resilient foundation for protecting lives and property.

“Preparedness is not a one-time task; it’s an ongoing effort,” said Lori Hedges, Director of Cotton County Emergency Management. “Over the last six years, Cotton County has taken major steps forward to ensure we are better equipped, better trained, and better connected than ever before. That means faster response times, stronger coordination, and safer outcomes for our residents.”

Key improvements in Cotton County’s disaster readiness include:

Enhanced Training & Exercises – Multi-agency drills and annual exercises to ensure coordinated response across fire, law enforcement, EMS, and volunteer agencies.

Upgraded Equipment – Improved communications tools, protective equipment, and emergency response resources for first responders.

Community Outreach – Public safety campaigns on severe weather, flood safety, tornado preparedness, and winter readiness to help families stay informed.

Partnerships & Coordination – Strengthened ties with state and regional emergency management offices to bring additional resources to Cotton County when needed.

“Cotton County is more prepared today than at any time in our history,” Sheriff Tim King said. “Our progress is a credit to the hard work of our first responders, community partners, and the public who take preparedness seriously. Working together, we will continue building a safer, stronger Cotton County.”

Residents are encouraged to stay engaged this month by reviewing family emergency plans, updating disaster supply kits, and signing up for local emergency alerts.
