Funeral services for Wayne Newman will be held at First Baptist Church, Walters, on Friday, June 20, 2025, at 10:00 a.m., with Rev. Brad Spurlock officiating. Interment will follow at the Walters Cemetery. Visitation will take place at Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Walters on Thursday, June 19, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Wesley Wayne Newman was born July 6, 1931, in Duncan, Oklahoma, to Wesley John and Pearl Estella (Barber) Newman. He passed away at his home in Walters on June 11, 2025, at the age of 93 years, 11 months, and 5 days.
Wayne began his education at Thompson School and later attended Burrows, completing ninth grade. He graduated from Velma Alma High School in 1950 and then attended Oklahoma A&M. He married Carol Ann Lemons on April 2, 1953, at First Baptist Church in Walters. The couple lived in Stillwater while Wayne completed his bachelor’s degree in Animal Science, and eventually made their home in Walters, with time also spent in Texas and Alabama. Together, they raised three children: Ann, Randy, and Robert.
Wayne served in the U.S. Army beginning in 1954 and was stationed at Fort Sill. He continued his military service in the Army Reserve, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel after a combined 37 years. Simultaneously, he worked for 34 years in Civil Service at Sheppard Air Force Base, retiring in 1987 as Head of Instructors for Aircraft Maintenance. In addition to his dual careers, Wayne enjoyed ranching.
Following Carol Ann’s passing in 2007, Wayne later married Virginia Maby (Johnson) Lovett on November 14, 2007. They made their home southwest of Marlow until her passing in 2022, after which Wayne returned to Walters.
A man of deep faith, Wayne was saved in January 1950 and remained active in First Baptist Church Walters, serving as a deacon (ordained in 1959), Sunday School teacher, and director. He enjoyed ranching, fishing, woodworking, and making knives. He was devoted to God, country, and family.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; wives Carol Ann and Virginia; his son, Randy Newman; stepson, Randy Lovett; four brothers, infant John Wendell, Imon, Allen Lee, and Paul Newman; and his sister, Wynola Eaton.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ann Marie and Jimmy King of Walters; son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Karen Newman of Walters; brother, Philip Newman and wife Deanna of Duncan; sisters, Mary Fern Stewart of Edmond and Melva Hines of Sulphur; sisters-in-law, Francine Newman and Marsha Newman of Duncan, and Janette Lemons of Edmond.
He is also survived by five grandchildren: Candi Gail Mays and husband Mickey, and their children Kayla and Jordyn of Pink, OK; Kasie Lynn Thompson and husband Shane, and their children Paisley and Cord of Pink, OK; Cody Wayne Newman of Walters; James Wesley King and wife Anne, and their children Briley, James Robert, Jackson, and Luke of Rock Springs, WY; and Justin Ray King and wife Jessica, and their children Emma and Ella of Walters.
Additionally, Wayne is survived by his extended family through Virginia: sons Gary Lovett and wife Vicki, Steve Lovett and wife Kathy, daughter-in-law Angie Lovett, and a host of beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to Walters First Baptist Church or the Walters Cemetery.
