Funeral services were held at Hulen United Methodist Church, Hulen, OK, on Monday, January 6, 2025, at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Brantley Tillery officiating and burial in the Walters Cemetery, Walters, OK. Visitation was held on Sunday evening from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Hart-Wyatt Funeral Home in Walters. Shirley Joann Bizzell Martens was born to Harry and Winnie (Davis) Bizzell on July 8, 1935, in Walters, OK, and departed this life in her home on January 2, 2025, at the age of 89 years, 5 months, and 25 days. Shirley started school in a small country school north of Temple, OK, before the family moved south of Temple. She graduated from Temple High School in 1953. On July 12, 1953, she married Ralph Martens in her parents’ home. They started their life together in Hasting, OK, and moved northeast of Walters in 1971, where they remained the rest of their lives. Shirley was the secretary at the Walters United Methodist Church for 35 years, working with 13 different pastors during that time. She was proud to have chaired the highly successful annual Walters Methodist Hamburger Supper for 20 years, coordinating food donations and scheduling volunteers for the event. She was a member of the Walters and Hulen United Methodist Churches. Shirley is survived by her children Ernie (Judy) Martens of Sallisaw, OK, and Tammy (Robert) Hartman of Walters, OK; grandchildren Holly (George) Bormann, Tucker (Erika) Martens, Brian (Tiffany) Scott, and Dana (Jason) Redden; along with 10 great-grandchildren. She was also blessed with extended family and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her husband Ralph, her parents, four siblings (Joyce, Ralph, Donnie, and Ernie), and her son-in-law Richard Scott.
