On Monday, December 16, 2024, the demolition of the old “Meja” or “Coppick” building began. Owner Jay Driscoll was sad to see it go but was ordered by the City of Walters over the past two years to tear it down. Many citizens of Walters were disappointed, as the building held fond memories from their childhood.
Residents reminisced about the 25-cent hamburger, fry, and coke deal and the large candy display they enjoyed from Mr. Coppick. Others recalled Meja’s serving the best burgers in town with the friendliest service. While many historic buildings in Walters are still structurally sound, they often need costly TLC. It’s bittersweet to bid farewell to buildings that once held our cherished memories.
