Walters Public School is uniquely fortunate among schools in Oklahoma. Upon learning about the All School Reunion planned for Saturday, November 16, Dr. Bobby Palmer contacted retired WHS art teacher Beca Potter and expressed interest in creating a mural on campus. Dr. Palmer has strong ties to WPS; he is a Class of ‘69 graduate, taught high school art in 1973-75, and is noted for starting the HS Art program that is in strong standing at WHS.
He arrived on Friday to begin preparations, collaborating with Mrs. Potter and her husband, Richard. They were joined by Jimmie Dedmon, WPS Superintendent, and Kayla Kohout, a local artist and owner of KAYKO Art. Kayla stated, “I’ve always admired Dr. Palmer’s work, and when I saw him painting, I wanted to introduce myself and connect with his team. As the owner of Kayko Art and a muralist, I believe art brings people together in ways words can’t. It’s not just the painting, but the shared stories and perspectives that make it meaningful. I’m grateful to have had the chance to be part of this project and witness how art unites us all.”
After completing the initial preparations, Dr. Palmer and Mrs. Potter returned on Friday night to outline the mural of the flag using an opaque projector. Saturday morning commenced the meticulous task of painting the flag. Dr. Palmer was assisted by Clint Thurman, Richard Potter, Derek Best, Kayla Kohout, Ms. Comas, WHS Art teacher, and the WHS Art Club members including: Cheyenne Parkinson, Lilli Haider, Alexus Roa, Jaedyn Turner, Madison McClung, Brina McClung, Kojji Rennick, Ace Boucher, Joie Smith, Kris Riley, and Jacy Lee. The great flag was finished Saturday afternoon and can be seen on the West end of the elementary gym that faces Broadway Street.
Mr. Dedmon expressed his gratitude upon completion of the mural by saying, “I would like to thank Dr. Palmer and the numerous volunteers that helped bring this project to life as a part of our alumni weekend. The beautiful flag will serve as a symbol of pride for our district and community for years to come.”
