Shirley Sue Dowlen, a beacon of generosity and unwavering faith, passed away on October 28, 2024, at the age of 89 in Walters, Oklahoma. Born on July 28, 1935, in Stephens County, Oklahoma, to William and Addie Bowlware Kirkland, both of whom predeceased her, Shirley’s life was a testament to the values of family, hard work, and community spirit. Shirley was the loving matriarch of a large and vibrant family. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Kelver K. Dowlen, her brother, Jerry Kirkland, and her parents. Her legacy continues through her children: Joe, Mike, John Dowlen, Rebecca Coffell, and Teresa Dowlen. Shirley’s love extended to her 17 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, each of whom she cherished deeply. A particularly touching chapter in her life was when she adopted one of her granddaughters as her own daughter, an act that spoke volumes about her character.
Having pursued higher education for some time, Shirley’s lifelong learning was most evident in her practical wisdom and the successful management of the family’s cattle ranch. She was not only an integral part of the ranch’s operations but also an active participant in her community, where her contributions will be remembered by many. Shirley’s commitment to her faith was unwavering. As a dedicated member of the Hulen Methodist Church, she lived a life that mirrored the principles she believed in. Her faith-filled nature was an inspiration to her family and all who knew her. It was in her daily actions that Shirley embodied the daily devotionals and prayed the Serenity Prayer: “God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time; enjoying one moment at a time; accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it; trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will; that I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next. Amen.”
Known for her generous and thoughtful nature, Shirley never hesitated to offer support to those in need. Her home was a welcoming haven, her presence a comforting embrace. Friends, family, and strangers alike were often the recipients of her kindness, and she was beloved for her ability to make each person feel valued and loved. In reflecting on Shirley’s life, it is clear that she was a woman of remarkable strength and character. Her resilience in the face of life’s challenges was matched only by her capacity for love and her dedication to her family. She was a pillar of her community, a guiding light to her family, and a friend to all.
Shirley Sue Dowlen’s life was a journey marked by an enduring legacy of love and service. She will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Though she has left this earthly realm, her spirit will continue to guide and inspire those she has left behind. Shirley’s life was a true embodiment of the virtues she held dear, and her memory will be cherished forever. As we bid farewell to Shirley, we are reminded of the words of Helen Keller: “What we have once enjoyed deeply we can never lose. All that we love deeply becomes a part of us.” Shirley’s love has indeed become a part of us, and for that, we are eternally grateful.
